2-Year-Old Drank Eyeglasses Cleaner – Is It a Danger?

My 2-year-old drank some eyeglass cleaner that he found in a drawer at my parents’ cabin—a Visaclean product. So far, he seems fine and is drinking water. What do we do?

Eyeglass cleaners such as Visaclean contain benzalkonium chloride, which has been reported to cause mild gastrointestinal irritation with oral intake. If he is asymptomatic and tolerating fluids, nothing is required at this time. Offer fluids and food as tolerated. Observe for signs of vomiting, drooling, or mouth irritation. If he starts to show symptoms or if his symptoms worsen, seek care.
