2-Year-Old Licked a Small Amount of Fertilizer – Is It Dangerous?
Hi, I need some help. My 2-year-old son just licked—maybe tasted—a small amount, about the size of a pea, of some fertilizer we have at home. It was a granular Earth-Wise brand fertilizer, and we also sprayed some liquid weed control in the yard earlier today. He’s acting fine right now—no symptoms. Should I be worried?

Hey olivia,Based on what you’ve described, this small exposure—a pea-sized amount of granular fertilizer, and possible contact with the liquid weed control—represents a low toxicity risk, given that he is presently asymptomatic.
Here are a few things you should do:
- If you have not already done so, wipe out and rinse his mouth.
- Provide water or milk to help dilute any leftover product.
- Monitor at home for a few hours for any signs of:
- Nausea or vomiting
- Drooling or refusal to eat
- Diarrhea
- Coughing or gagging (if aspiration occurred)
These fertilizers and weed control products may cause mild gastrointestinal upset or irritation, but with an oral exposure of this nature, life-threatening toxicity is very unlikely.
If he develops any symptoms, please update us or go to the ER if they are severe. No further care is needed for now, and you can continue monitoring him at home.
