A 25-year-old took 4 Zinc tablets – vomiting and feeling unwell

My 25-year-old daughter-in-law, who weighs about 190 pounds, may have accidentally taken four 30 mg tablets of zinc about an hour and a half ago. She’s now having some diarrhea, vomiting, feels chilled, and sleepy. What should we do?

A patient who ingests 120 mg of zinc and develops vomiting, diarrhea, chills, and drowsiness will not receive any serious toxic effects; however, she needs basic supportive care. Offer the patient some fluids and a healthy snack to help with the nausea. The patient should be monitored for persistent or worsening symptoms, specifically vomiting, flushing, or diarrhea. Although this exposure is very unlikely to cause serious toxicity, at the time of follow-up, the patient should be considered for medical evaluation. If the symptoms persist or worsen, they should go to the emergency department or call a poison centre.
