Took 2000 mg Acetaminophen in 24 Hours – Is It Okay?
Yesterday afternoon, I took two acetaminophen tablets (500 mg each) for some tooth pain, around 4 or 5 PM. Then last night around 11 PM, I accidentally took two more acetaminophen tablets, bringing the total to 2000 mg in 24 hours. Today I don’t have much of an appetite (no nausea or vomiting), I have some pain in my ribs and anxiety. Should I be worried?

This is a lot of acetaminophen, but it’s significantly less than the dose commonly associated with toxicity in adults. You have some symptoms—low appetite, rib discomfort, and anxiety—that are not symptoms typically expected with acetaminophen toxicity at that dose. There is no expected liver injury. Continue to hydrate, don’t take any acetaminophen today, and obtain medical assistance if any of your other health problems (e.g., rib pain, anxiety) get worse.
